The name 'War of the Roses' wasn't popularized until Sir Walter Scott published Anne of Geierstein in the 19th century. Samuel Daniel, a 16th century historian, used the term 'Civil Wars' in his work detailing the conflict: First Four Books of the Civil Wars. So english people of his time called it the "Civil Wars".
