what are some good resources for a concise, but thorough, history of web development / the software engineering industry?

I don't think it's possible to write or reference a comprehensive history of web development w/o breaking the 20 year rule. 'Web development' was an embryonic industry in 1995. Having said that I have a copy of A History of Modern Computing by Ceruzzi, which has a large bibliography featuring some works focused on the history of software development. You might be interested in Programmers at Work ed. by Lammers, consisting of interviews with 20 prominent 80's programmers as a primary source (all the usual caveats with first hand accounts apply of course).
