Admittedly I haven't read the book, but as it was published in 1940 I think the chance of it still being authoritative is precisely zero. Even leaving aside historical theoretical developments and more nuanced interpretations of sources, there has been a wealth of new material uncovered through archaeology and other means.

"Daily life" is really too nebulous of a category to have any one authoritative work, but I would recommend Mary Beard's Fires of Vesuvius, which is about Pompeii.
