Alternately, how long has sticky paper been in use for labelling glass- or ceramic-ware?
One would take a parchment and tie it around the neck of the bottle with string.
In the interest of completeness. Another way of doing it was to mould or stamp the bottle with a mark of some type, similar to how coca cola bottles have been designed.
