I have students in my drama class devising a piece of drama based around apartheid. They have decided to have a white couple who adopted a black child, then the child gets taken from them.
I don't think they've researched this all that much, and while it is a drama class, history is important in shaping their piece.
Your students might be interested in learning about Sandra Laing.
Sandra was born in 1955 South Africa to white parents. Her parents, grandparents and great-grandparents were all white, but Sandra was thought to be "coloured" (mixed race) because she had dark skin and her hair had texture.
Her parents fought a lot of lawsuits to prove she was white and keep her in their home. Her dad took a blood test to prove he was her father, but DNA wasn't available at the time for definitive proof.
Now it is thought that Sandra was the biological daughter of her parents, but that one of her early ancestors was black. After 10 years of legal battles, Sandra was classified as white, but was still shunned by the white community.
Sandra ended up leaving her white family and eloping with a "black" man when she was 16. They had two children who were classified as "coloured." The only way to stay with them was for her to get re-classified as "coloured" as well.
Sandra lost contact with her family and wasn't reunited with her mother until 2000. Her white brothers still refused to talk to her as of 2009.
