I've recently been delving into Spanish-American history and am fascinated by Maximilian I of Mexico. He seems like a really complex but unknown character with an exciting past. Can anyone suggest good ways to learn more about him and the history surrounding his times?
Recommendations for general introductions to the Hasburgs/Austro-Hungarians and Spanish colonization of America in general would be greatly appreciated. I read far too much WWII history in Germany. Thanks! Jack

A little late but I just read The crown of Mexico by Joan Haslip and I think you may like it. I'm also a fan of Maximilian I and wanted to read about his familiy, life and beliefs before being emperor, which is the main theme of the book (at least the first 250 pages are before Mexico).
It was an interesting read with all the info I wanted to know on Maximilian's side. Now I'm looking for a book with a Benito Juárez perspective.
