Why did France gain so little in winning against the UK in the American Independance War?

The French achieved their objective which was to restrict British influence in the Americas.

However at the time France was economically very weak and its political system was starting to crumble to the point where their own revolution began only a few years later. This threw the country into turmoil for a decade and ended up putting them at war with much of the rest of Europe.

Wasn't France able to seize some Caribbean islands and their plantations from the British during that war?

Those islands afaik were incredible money makers so their gains might not have seemed like much in terms of territory but they were a lot in terms of wealth.
