The biggest myth is "If the Germans had just a few more blah blah blah." The truth is Germany could never compete with the combined industrial power of the USSR(backed by USA) and the United States. Combined, the allied countries poured out more than 100,000 tanks throughout the entire war. The Germans around 30,000 total(can someone verify?). Only around 1,300 Tiger I E's saw action, as well as maybe 500 Konigstigers, both of which had incredible amounts of flaws. They were overly expensive and unreliable. For every battlefield success the Tiger tanks had, there were a dozen mechanical/operational failures.

One of the best vehicles the Nazi's had was the turretless Stug III G Assault Gun. Much cheaper, easier to maintain/produce than other tanks, and the PaK.40 cannon was quite effective against most allied armor. The 10,000 Stugs made, accounted for a hefty portion of enemy armor destroyed in the war.

The best German tank was probably the Panther(inspired by the T-34) earlier Panther variants had massive amounts of engine issues(many caught fire at Kursk). Major problems were fixed by the time the Panther G started production. Although it still had a handful of glaring issues. The Panther G was an overall effective tank. Nearly 3,000 Gs were produced. The Germans had a dizzying amount of different tank, tank hunter, and assault gun variants. Some were effective, others were not. Think the Ferdinand/Elefant. Big and scary, but in the end the most useless vehicle of WWII.

If Hitler had Nuclear Weapons before the allies then maybe he could have won. If Barbarossa had not been delayed for six weeks maybe it would have been successful enough to grant victory. If Gunderian had ignored Hitler's idiotic orders and driven on with Army Group Centre to storm Moscow maybe an Eastern Front victory could have been achieved. If Rommel captured the Suez Canal maybe they would have won. Notice all the "ifs" and "maybes" in reality... The day Hitler attacked the Soviet Union was the begging of the end.

Hitler was trying to win a war against the world. In his maniac mind it was possible. In reality it was not.

If you are interested in the German Armor of WWII, I suggest Otto Carius' memoir "Tigers In The Mud" it is an awesome book fallowing his journey to becoming one of the lead Tiger Aces of the war. He operated on the Eastern Front in the Tiger I and later in the west commanding the badass Jadgtiger.

Tank technology had nothing to do with it. Research and development costs were negligible in comparison to the economic differences between warring powers. Most German tanks were useful, inexpensive and reliable. Tigers were a small minority of tank production. For the first three years of the war, the Wehrmacht suffered because they had not developed tanks as heavy and complex as their enemies and by the time the first Tiger rolled off the production lines the Reich was doomed. The Americans and British developed and tested plenty of heavy tanks on par with German vehicles, which were not used partially for logistical reasons.

If you want Germany to defeat Britain or the Soviet Union then you have to either fundamentally change the balance of industrial capacity and manpower or radically alter the course of political events.
