Why is the lorica segmentata so iconic when we think about Imperial Rome's military, and why did it eventually fall out of use?

Many movies and shows about ancient Rome show the lorica segmentata in some way (even when it's way out of period). I'm curious as to why it became somewhat of the default image of the Roman military when people talk about it and if it was so great, why did it end up falling by the wayside for other kinds of armor?
