It was basically the first modern census. It is the first record, not of nobility, but of what the land contained. I believe that I'd what made it so important. Before then a record might say that the Earl of Cornwall tithed so much to the king and could come up with so many men to fight. The Domesday book told the king that the Earl not only paid this much in tax and could get 2000 men, but where those men came from, their names, how much land they tilled and how many cows his family had.

It is an amazingly complete inventory of the country. It names places people and things that would not otherwise have been recorded.
