There may be various guesses and speculations about the origin, but the Oxford English Dictionary says "etymology unknown", as do other dictionaries.

Basically nobody knows the origin of the phrase, but it was first used only in the late 1950's or early 1960's, so it's highly unlikely that it had anything to do with slave ships. It's too modern for that.
