I've currently become enamoured with the Saxon era of England, I always found it average, but now all of a sudden I am fascinated by it. I am currently reading Ivanhoe, which, whilst not exactly a historically accurate piece of work, certainly helped broaden my horizon. Any places to find beginner's info (more than just Alfred the Great! Danes! Vikings! Normans! (boooo)), for me to read post exams. Thanks!
For an overview of the Anglo-Saxon period, I would personally recommend you start with R. Fleming's Britain after Rome. It makes good use of new archaeological material (which jas radically transformed our understanding of the period in the past few decades), is inexpensive if you don't have access to an academic library, and is written for a non-specialist audience.
Are there any specific topics you'd like to read about, beyond a general overview of the period?
Sir Frank Stenton's Anglo-Saxon England (Oxford University Press, 3rd ed. 1971) was a classic in its day, the first scientific study of pre-Norman England. On some points of detail it has been superseded but even its critics acknowledge its status.
