One of my personal favorites is Nicholas Winton, a British man who saved over 600 children from the Holocaust.

You can read about him here, but the gist of it is that he was born Jewish and Baptized at a young age. He established a Children's Section in Czechoslovakia meant to mimic the Kindertransport (that saved 10,000 children itself), and began taking applications without authorization to save children before the Germans dismembered Czechoslovakia. He raised money, found families willing to take on children, and he kept a scrapbook with 664 names of children he saved and who were sent to British families.

When his wife found the scrapbook, it was the first time anyone found out about what he'd done. That was in 1988, a full 43 years after the end of WWII.

He was knighted in 2002, and there was a scene organized that never fails to bring a tear to my eyes. That scene, organized in 1988, was on the BBC's "That's Life". You can view it here.

You might be interested in reading more about the Righteous Among the Nations title bestowed by Yad Vashem (the Israeli Holocaust Memorial) upon non-Jews who helped save Jewish lives during the holocaust at the risk of their own lives.

My personal favorite - just due to sheer irony - is Albert Göring, the brother of the infamous Hermann Göring.
