Universities tended to be christian religious institutions so the students tended to wear the appropriate clerical dress. The scholastic form of gown diverted in style from the clerical form over the years. Initially, however, undergraduates wore caps and gowns at all times, indeed, undergraduates at some universities are still obliged to wear them when they attend examinations. The wearing of cap and gown at graduation just reflects this formal academic dress.
