[meta] What is this subreddit defention of history, the past or a constructed version based on what survives?

Definitely constructed stories about the past, based on surviving sources.

Even if we had perfect knowledge of the past, history would still be constructed, because it's not just a collection of all the random facts of the past. It's organized narratives, stories that treat specific aspects of the past, and as such always crafted by the storytellers.

I obviously cannot speak for this subreddit, but I'd say that by unfortunate necessity, the study of history is practically always the latter.

I think there are probably as many different definitions of history as there are users, but it's hard to study history for a long time and think you're accurately reconstructing exactly what happened.
