I was recently given this Photo of my grandfather.
I was curious what model plane he's in. He flew out of Anak Island in the Aleutians around 1944. Here's a shot of the crew too. Thanks preemptively.
Looks like a Douglas Dauntless, maybe. Anak Air Base was mostly out of the war by 1944.
From the shape of the rear cockpit and twin .30 caliber turret, I believe the aircraft pictured to be a SBD Dauntless, a naval dive bomber and Scout aircraft. [Here's a similar shot of the rear cockpit and turret of the SBD] (http://www.thescale.info/news/publish/Douglas-Dauntless-SBD5-Detail.shtml) The later SB2C helldiver would have had a different looking canopy and would have lacked rivets (Edit: I mean it would have had flush rivets).
The crew picture probably includes some personnel from other aircraft since a Dauntless had a crew of two.
It's some variant of a USN/USMC Douglas SBD Dauntless dive bomber. The aircraft was also known as the A-24 Banshee when in USAAF service.
