For example the Whydah, a slave ship later turned into a pirate ship, was supposedly classified as a galley even though it seems pretty large and I don't see where rowers would sit amongst all its broadside guns.
The Wydah seems to have retained the "galley" moniker because it was fitted with sweeps (oars), although sweeps do not seem to have been its primary means of propulsion. If anything I would call it a late stuck of a galleass, but contemporary mariners and chroniclers may not have made such a distinction.
