What would be your definition of "trash entertainment"? William Shakespeare, even, was criticized by contemporaries for pandering too much to the common people at the expense of concepts like the Aristotelian dramatic unities. He certainly wouldn't be considered trash now, but you could say he was in his own time.

Aristotle's Poetics is largely a defense of Ancient Greek tragic drama. The kind of defense that Aristotle mounts suggests that he's defending it against charges that it's pretty trashy. For example, Aristotle says:

Things are censured either as impossible, or irrational, or
morally hurtful, or contradictory, or contrary to artistic 
correctness.

Which sounds a lot like some criticisms I've heard of action movies.
