If you walk across a carpet in wool socks and then touch a metal doorknob, there will be a mild electrostatic discharge. Similarly, if you rub amber it develops a static electric charge which will attract lightweight object like feathers. If enough static electricity builds up there may even be an audible crackling sound.

These phenomena must have been mysterious and spooky to pre-science societies. How did they explain them?
