• Did champions of opposing armies do battle ever?

• Is there any plausible evidence for occurrences of single combat by "champions" or highly esteemed soldiers in the field of combat?

• At the beginning of the film Troy a battle wasn't decided by the fight of two champions. Did this happen in real life?
