Can anyone help identify the ribbons and branch of service of my South African ancestor?

If this is too off-topic, please forgive me and send me on my way.

But, if it's not...I am looking for any information about my ancestor who was born in 1881 in South Africa and died in 1919.

This is the only photo I have of him - Edward William McCallum. I'm guessing this is from World War I, although I can't make out enough details in his cap or on his medals to be able to identify them. I'm hoping someone with more knowledge of the era might be able to lend some insight.

I think the cap badge might have a horse or antelope on it? And if the colors in this colorized photo are to be believed, it looks like possibly some version of the Belgian flag on the right side of the medal board?

Thanks to a tip elsewhere, I think the cap badge might be from the 1st Infantry Brigade from the Union of South Africa. If that helps narrow the possibilities, Wikipedia says they served in Egypt and on the Western Front.

Could the third medal then (from the left) be a French Cross/Croix de Guerre? I was looking all through British and South African medals and decorations, and never thought to look for awards from foreign powers.
