Arabic-based abjads (as well as Arabic itself) were used in Islamic Sub-Saharan Africa to represent native languages, including KiSwahili (see Utendi wa Tambuka) and various West African languages (Songhay, Mandinka, etc). So yes, there were alphabets prior to the introduction of the Latin one; after all, the city of Timbuktu was a great center of learning.
