I'm looking for a book or books that have information regarding the militaries that fought in the Crusades, or even the medieval ages more generally, but with a more detailed focus on the arms, armor, orders of battle and actual fighting formations being used.
I've got a stack of booms that talk about medieval warfare more generally but I can't find any that talk about how knights might have fought on the battlefield or how spearwalls would be employed or other specific tactical information. Thanks ahead of time.
It's very difficult to get a close perspective on medieval battles, unfortunately, due to the limitations of our sources. Still, some historians have done the best we can for various periods.
I would recommend looking at John France's Victory in the East: A Military History of the First Crusade and Western Warfare In The Age Of The Crusades, 1000-1300 for a good military account of the Crusades and the era around them.
For a really detailed battle study Kelly DeVries Infantry Warfare in the Early Fourteenth Century: Discipline, Tactics, and Technology is a great book, although it is entirely focused on a relatively short period of time well after the Crusades. His bibliography might suggest other good books to look at.
Matthew Strickland and Robert Hardy's The Great Warbow also has very good battle discussions but, given the topic of the book, they are almost exclusively interested in archers and how they performed in battle. Very little discussion of knights or the nobility.
