I don't know much about it, just that there were a series of trials about widespread child abuse related to satanic rituals, that there were accusations of conspiracy at high levels of government, and that it is largely thought that the entire ordeal was largely fabricated by flawed techniques of interrogating the victims. Would anyone mind writing up a more detailed description of the scandal, or point me to some books or articles for the uneducated?

It's important to remember that these sorts of social panics have many causes, including fundamentalist Christianity leaking into the mainstream, pop psychology leaving its mark, mental illness on some of the participants, and a sensationalized news media. I'm not sure whether there's been any real in-depth study of the SRA stuff on the level the you're asking about. I do know that Cornerstone Magazine did several exposes of the people who started much of the Satanic/Witchcraft conspiracy stuff that eventually blossomed into the SRA stuff. You can check out that series of articles here. Cornerstone has since closed shop, but they did several stories about the major players that eventually took much of the factual wind out of SRA's sails; if you can still find it, they did an expose on John Todd as well, another key player in laying the foundations for the SRA panic.
Linley Hood wrote an excellent book called A City Possessed. It focuses on the civic crèche case in Christchurch, New Zealand, but the first chapters are a superb run down of the phenomenon in general, historical and cultural antecedents etc. I highly recommend it.
