Follow up question, did many soldiers move around from the fronts? I know after VE day many did, but I'm more interested in before that.
I know that often a person could choose what theatre they wanted to fight in, however I am not too knowledgeable in this regard.
What I do know however is that if you near family ties to an enemy country you would be sent to the opposite theatre of war. For example, Jack Werner of the 7th infantry division, was an Austrian Jew who fled to the United States joined the army and requested to fight in Europe. However his request was denied and he was sent to the pacific.
On the other side, the majority of ordinary Nisei Americans who joined the military were sent to Europe. The 442nd Infantry regiment composed of almost entirely of Nisei Americans did the majority of their fighting in Italy and southern France.
