As the title asks, when did the word "hippy" become a negative word, like it is today. Of course there are certain members of our society on the fringe, who see it as a positive word, but it seems that in popular media today, it is a pegorative term for "laid-back" people with no direction in life.

If someone could give me an etymology of the word, and its transformation, that would be very nice.
