I've recently acquired a pistol captured by:
Lt.(?) Winfield C(?) Alkire/Alkins (spelling unclear).
His service number was O-1171263.
It appears he was part of the occupation force in Tokyo. He may have served in a field artillery battalion.
Does anyone know how I could find out more about this man?
Because he was an Army officer, I haven't been able to look him up at the National Archives AAD (which doesn't include the record of Army officers).

Per this handy AAD .pdf. I recognize that you stated that you could not go through AAD, but it does offer additional sources. Be aware that "In July 1973, a fire destroyed 85 percent of the Army and Army Air Forces individual personnel files, but the NPRC staff often is able to locate basic information relevant to a person’s service from other records in their custody. The fire did not affect records of the Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard."
As well, unless you have additional information, it may be worth trying the AAD - it is possible that he enlisted, fought in WWII, then was promoted, as so many other men of his time were. Horrendous casualties, especially among young lieutenants, led to many grizzled sergeants receiving battlefield or temporary commissions. Give it a shot, the worst they can say is "no".
