Was it common for a European monarch to be from a different country?

by Jonny9792a

I've noticed that a lot of monarchs weren't born in the country that they ended up ruling in. Was this really common, and how did the people in their countries feel about having a foreign ruler? For example, King George I and King George II of Britain were both born in Hannover and didn't speak English as their first language.

hi! there is a lot more room for contributions here, but to get started you'll find a few examples in these posts; the first couple include some brief comment on how their subjects felt

a little outside the geographic bound
