Okay, so I was looking at a bit of my family tree. And around the great (x4) grandfather, his headstone says, "GAR Co. H, 3rd Reg." I have no idea what that means, and my question is simply: What is that?

"GAR" stands for the "Grand Army of the Republic." It was an organization for Union Army and Navy veterans of the Civil War. A large number of American towns had a post, which would organize services and activities for veterans.
