How long have exercises like push ups and sit ups been around?

by Munkystory

Have they been prevalent around the world, or were there exercises that we no longer practice?

Follow up: at which point in history did conscious exercise become a thing? It seems vaguely like, for quite a bit of history, people desired a life of leisure because they spent so much time working that they wouldn't need to go out of their way to exercise. Was exercise for exercise's sake a thing amongst those who did have a life of leisure (e.g. nobility), and if so, how far back?

Edit -- Pulling from /u/nhnhnh comment below, this thread has some good answers to my question.

Another question, was the idea of a strongman prevalent during the ancient times? Let's say around the city state period of ancient greece and the middle roman republic of 200bc to 50 bc? And was being a man of immense strength a symbol of power and grace or barbarity?
