I was wondering if you guys knew of any good literature from the perspective of neutral citizens on the wars which were happening near their border
I'm sure you could find many excellent books about the Swiss perspective/experience of WWI. I know of none, but a search should turn some up.
As to Swiss civilians 'observing' battles from the border, unlikely. In WWI, the area where the Trenches and the Swiss Frontier met was a backwater of the backwater of the Western Front. All of the 'action', from 1915 onwards, took place north of the Verdun Salient, wit the exception of some fighting around Hartmannwillerskopf and St. Mihiel, and neither of these was anywhere near the Swiss Frontier. In WWII, fighting in 1940 and 1944 was fast-paced, and aside from the Free French First Army reaching the Swiss Frontier in 1944, near the end of the Rhine River, there was little to no action.
Aside from some small incidents of border crossing, which led to internment or expulsion, during WWI, I can think of no cases of 'battles' being 'observed' by Swiss citizens.
