Was the sea calmer when there weren't thousands of ship's stirring it up?

I was wondering about this, It sounds kinds of silly but I cant stop thinking about it.

The answer is that ships have approximately zero effect on waves on the sea. The sea is BIG. It's not like a bathtub. You obviously don't live near the sea.

Winds, currents, and tides stir up the sea, and the occasional earthquake. Nothing much else has any effect.

Maybe you should cross post to /r/Askscience to see if ships even make an impact on wave patterns today today?
