Germany was in a depression following WWI, and desperately needed someone to lead them out of it. Adolf Hitler rose to power, promising to lead them into a new prosperous era (which he very well did). People clung to every word he said, because they genuinely felt that this man would help them. He also had great public speaking skills.

A good person? Absolutely not, but as a leader, he did good.
