Happy "Battle of Waterloo" day everyone. Shouldn't that period, 1812 - 1815 have been called World War 1?

It involved pretty much the same actors - most of Europe plus North America and Russia, just allied slightly differently: France playing Germany's role and the USA on the wrong side! What made the 1914-18 war the first official World War instead?

I was recently asked this question by one of my former teachers that I now work with. I asked her, "Did Japan get involved in it?" That it itself should be the answer because in reality the Napoleonic Wars are a European series of wars.

No, the Seven Years War was. Fought in Europe, North America, India, and the Caribbean.
