Yes. The sword, after all, is basically a cutting weapon that also hits like a piece of rebar. Against unarmoured or soft-armoured foes, excellent. Against mail and stuff made out of small plates, so-so and the point gets to be important, but also the sheer whallop for breaking bones and flesh. Look at the Bayeux Tapestry at all the guys carrying clubs that are just tree branches. Against plate, swords just aren't most effective and axes and hammers will do more damage.

So an early knight is more likely to use the sword in battle (Charlemagne, Normans) but by the Hundred Years Wars, it's not the best choice when you're facing another lobster suit. Still good for cutting down less-armoured types.
