I have to give a presentation on zionism for my "Antisemitism in the 19th and 20th century" class (focus is mostly on German sources, since I'm at a German university) and I'm struggling with finding the right structure.
My original plan was to talk about Theodor Herzl and his pamphlet "Der Judenstaat". I was going to introduce zionism, Herzl as a person and the text itself briefly and then focus on the jewish reception of this work back then and compare it to today, how he is now celebrated as the founding father of Israel. But when going through my plans with my teacher, she wasn't really excited and told me to focus on our topic antisemitism and to talk about the origins of zionism. So now I'm a bit at a loss. We have to formulate a question and then answer it of course. Is "How was zionism a reaction to the antisemitism of the 19/20th" a good question? It feels too broad to me, I only have 15 minutes for my presentation. Can you help me narrow it a bit? Also I'd really like to include Theodor Herzl still, because I already have done work on this now and I don't want it to go to waste (also I think it's interesting).
Any suggestions for a good question and how to structure my presentation?

I think any presentation you try to do dealing with such a long period of time (19th-20th century) is not going to work well. There's too much material to go through, and you won't be able to present anything other than generalizations in fifteen minutes. So, narrow your topic down, and focus on anti-semitism, as your teacher clearly wants to do. Obviously I don't know what your assignment is exactly, but it seems to me that you could do this by only talking about Herzl (and perhaps skipping out on the reception part). In what ways is Der Judenstaat a response to the antisemitism of Herzl's times? If you have time you could then discuss how the pamphlet's perceptions of anti-semitism immediately affected the Zionist movement. But I would avoid going too far ahead in time.

I think you've now got the right idea, but it is very broad. One thing I suggest personally is not starting with Herzl. If I were to structure this, I'd be working on it in this way:
Russian anti-Semitism, and a brief description of the Pale of Settlement.
Creation of BILU (look up BILU manifesto).
Parallel to this, and a few years later, mention the Dreyfuss affair, which was huge in influencing Herzl.
Describe Herzl's Der Judenstaat, drawing heavily on where he talks about the Jewish Question and why anti-Semitism "cannot be eradicated".
Conclude by talking about how the phenomenon of worsening (or at least unending) anti-Semitism led to Zionists choosing to take action (Zionists had existed before BILU, but were mostly just writing papers about it) at almost the same time.
