Let me make myself a bit clearer. I don't mean pictures like in a childrens book but rather filled with maps and diagrams of the equipment. I find it more intereasting if I can get a good overview this way and quicker to get a grasp on since I don't have an abundant amount of free time.
I know some basics. I have read The Art of War, The Gallic Wars and some other books concerning military tactics and have also read alot on here and other articles. So I'm not really looking for something over simplified just an enjoyable read with visual explanations. Can be of any place or period if you have a good suggestion for it.
Every time someone wants something with visualization I recommend H.W. Koch's The Rise of Modern Warfare: 1618-1815, it's easily the best in that regard I've found.
With that said "books with lots of fancy pictures" and "well written academia" do not necessarily align often.
