OED says that it comes from the early 1960s and that its original meaning was the same as it is today - "the process of concealing the origins of money obtained illegally by passing it through a complex sequence of banking transfers or commercial transactions."

Launder, the verb meaning to clean, goes back to at least the early modern period and appears to be from the same Latin root as lavatory (restroom).
