The problem with this question is two-fold:
The war was about slavery. Every, and I mean EVERY, academic historian believes this. It is simply not in debate. All of the available evidence, including the statements of Confederate leaders at the time, including the declarations of secession themselves, pointed this out.
This is not the right sub to ask for answers in which "historical facts" and "specific people or microscopic historical facts" are not welcome. /r/AskHistorians is for those wanting answers based on evidence, and that's specifically what you seem to be excluding.
I'm honestly not too sure what you're asking. Are you asking why didn't Southerners abolish slavery in order to remain on the "right side" of history? If so, the reason they didn't was because they thought they were right. They claimed that they believed that slavery was the natural and right condition for Blacks. They thought that white supremacy was the natural order for things and should be protected.
If the South abolished slavery on its own accord then it wouldn't be "the South," if that makes sense.

If you have a question - "Were there calls in the south during or leading up to the Civil War to end slavery?", ask it. If you want to make a statement, there are other venues to do so. Don't combine the two please.
I'm not quite sure what you're even asking even reading the explicitly titled "question" section.
Could you condense it down a bit? And why are you preemptively dismissing historical evidence? A lot of legal and personal writings make up a lot of the answers to this. I'm just confused because you spend most of the post questioning the personal morals of these people and then demand no "microhistory" in the answer.
Maybe I'm misreading though?
