In recent days I've seen it expressed around the internet that the South Carolinian units never used the Battle Flag of the Army of Northern Virginia. They say that to be accurately representative of those who served the CSA from South Carolina, the Confederate memorial in Columbia should be flying the rectangular blue-and-white Palmetto Flag. To what extent is this correct?

South Carolina units fought in both the Army of Northern Virginia and the Army of Tennessee. As such they did use the battle flags from both those armies. Most of the time this was done with a number on one side of the flag and "S.C." Like this flag of the 10th South Carolina. Others did use the state flag as a base for their own like the 1st Regiment of Rifles.
