What is this history of the Confederate Flag (Stars and Bars, Rebel, Dixie, etc) from pre-civil war to 1995?

I addressed this briefly in another thread.

I'm kinda trying to understand this as well. Today I've seen a handful of people on my Facebook sharing some pro-confederate flag post (apparently being from southern California allows one to have some souther pride) so I went to doing a little research on the interest and this article from CNN came up http://www.cnn.com/2015/06/24/us/confederate-flag-myths-facts/index.html but then on the other hand, this website also comes up http://www.rulen.com/myths/ which seems to contradict some of the things in the CNN article. (this website also seems to be where the person who posted the thing to Facebook seems to have gotten their information). So I came here seeking the answer, I haven't scrolled down far enough yet to find what I'm looking for but I thought I would tag along on your post to see if someone would jump in for an answer. Why are the southern states so hung up on this flag? Is it just a bunch of white redneck racists that still cling to this flag, or is their actual historical value in this flag?
