I searched for questions regarding war elephants, but I haven't seen anything like this. I'm curious as to whether they had protocols in case an elephant were to go berserk, how much to feed them, how to train them, etc. Kind of a broad question, but I'm interested in finding it out.
I think the way the Roman army dealt with Hannibal's war elephants was to let them charge. The soldiers would then quickly shift to either side to let the elephant move past them. The soldiers would then stab them in their sides. Also, Hannibal lost a lot of war elephants when trying to cross the Strait of Gibraltar. I think to preserve his elephants he would order his elephant handlers to kill the elephant if it was causing a disturbance while crossing. This was so that the distressed elephant wouldn't arouse the others and cause more elephant deaths.
