I did look at this article: http://www.jstor.org/stable/796808?seq=1#page_scan_tab_contents, but I'm not sure if it only talks about one flag design. I know which design it's talking about when it refers to Georgia flying it, because it's obvious which design Georgia is emulating, but after that point, I don't know if it's referring to that one design or multiple designs representing the confederacy.
I know that the flag was never adopted by the Confederate government. It was the battle flag of General lee so it obviously became very popular among confederate soldiers.
