My friend says most people don't realize that the confederate flag of today many associate with racism isn't the flag used in the civil war. Could someone give a me good history of the confederate flag flown today (like the one South Carolina is being called to take off their capitol building)?

I did look at this article: http://www.jstor.org/stable/796808?seq=1#page_scan_tab_contents, but I'm not sure if it only talks about one flag design. I know which design it's talking about when it refers to Georgia flying it, because it's obvious which design Georgia is emulating, but after that point, I don't know if it's referring to that one design or multiple designs representing the confederacy.

I know that the flag was never adopted by the Confederate government. It was the battle flag of General lee so it obviously became very popular among confederate soldiers.
