In 1915, The King's Shropshire Light Infantry was posted to Thessalonika in Greece and spent three years fighting the Bulgarians in Macedonia. They were based on the Struma front between Lake Doiran and Amphipolis, where they constructed trenches and dugouts.
A photograph recently emerged showing the soldiers holding skulls (suspected to be) from the ancient greek Amphipolis Tomb, found during the construction of trenches. Also, Dr Eric Gardner, a British medic and amateur archaeologist, who was also posted to Greece during WWI, revealed that he took various treasures found at Amphipolis and ‘donated’ them to the British Museum.
