So well, I have been playing assassins creed three and so far I have counted something like three or for forts (including one that I'm pretty sure is fictional). I would like to know more about these forts. What was there function? How many were there in the early days of pre-revolution America? How did they operate? I know that is a wide scope, but talk on one point if you can as I am open to many answers and this is a very broad qustion.
There were fortifications across Boston Neck, first built in 1631, and extended in 1710. There was a battery on Fort Hill, first built in 1632. I think there was another battery (North Battery) where Battery wharf is now, but I don't know when this might have been built.
The main fort in Boston was Castle William on Castle Island. This was first built in 1634 (though re-built and strengthened many times after that). Castle William was the main base for British military operations around Boston at the start of the Revolution. It was later renamed Fort Independence. The current fort on the site (no longer an island, but now connected to the mainland) was built between 1833 and 1855.
The original function of the fortifications on Boston Neck were to protect the town from land attack. All the other fortifications were mainly built to defend the port against naval attack.
