Themiscyra, or a city of the same name, was certainly a real place, existing up until Roman contact on the Thermodon. Lucullus laid siege to it during the war against Mithridates, and appears to have destroyed thr town, since it doesn't appear again. There is some debate in our texts over who founded Themiscyra--Scylax says it's a Greek town, but Diodorus and Herodotus both make it the capital city of the Amazons. Clearly the Amazonian tradition persisted, but as far as I know in thr historical period it was settled by Greeks
