Ok, bear with me, this is kind of a convoluted question.
So, i've been reading a lot of John Irving lately and he tends to have things take place in the mid to late-mid 20th century. However, in a lot of his books, the characters swear and exclaim vulgarities (frequently "fuck" and its derivatives) and it's happening (in the book) in the 1950's and 60's. A lot of underage sex and extra-marital sex in general happens as well.
But, according to 50's and 60's pop culture (at least before the free love movement and such) it seems that swearing and general crassness was very taboo and we, today, think of it as not being as vulgar - even wartime accounts I read rarely include swear words or anything like that, and if they do, it's usually only "bitch" or "damn". I just think of the 40's - 60's (even into the 70's and 80's) as very sheltered and even religious. Mostly, the pop culture wasn't nearly as suggestive as today's.
So, what i'm asking is: did people like this exist? Would people be nearly as colloquial as today? Would teenagers be having sex with condoms - or be getting pregnant and getting abortions? (i know condoms existed obviously). Or is the censorship of that era so great that we wouldn't know today?
While your question seems to be directed more towards literature, another aspect of popular culture was heavily censored to prevent these stories from reaching the general public; I'm referring to American film. In 1930 the Motion Picture Association issued the Production Code (also known as the Hays Code) which prevented any film "that will lower the moral standards of those who see it. Hence the sympathy of the audience should never be thrown to the side of crime, wrongdoing, evil or sin." Although films were still made about crime, such as Noir films from the 40s to the 60s, they often condemned such actions, and the use of swear words was forbidden. Coupled with the studio's goal of making films that would sit well with the general public of the time, Hollywood movies would often avoid these tricky subjects.
Did extra-marital sex happen before the 60's? Of course, but that doesn't mean that it was discussed in popular culture. The Hays code began to loosen by the end of the 50's, and was ultimately abolished in 1968, but the major studios still chose to produce family oriented films.
