Just because giant squid have only recently been confirmed as existing doesn't mean that they weren't known about before. There were many references to sea monsters written in ships' Log Books, official legal documents, many if not all of which seem to be referring to creatures that resemble giant squid. There are many, many references to them in writings from ancient times to the modern age; even the future King George V saw one when he was in the Royal Navy.
