I'm aware that both officers (and soldiers?) had to first purchase their uniforms before being fully initiated into the British military, so I'm curious how much their Wellington boots, their tailored grandiose jackets of red, and personal equipment and weaponry would cost, either individually or cumulatively. Translated into today's US dollar or Euro or Pound Sterling, how much would say, a Captain's uniform cost?

Also, was the practice of purchasing one's uniform itself a uniformed practice across the European nations, or was it merely Britain?
