It is more likely that , in 1715, he would be converting from Catholic to Anglican- that would be the denomination most likely to be termed "orthodox". I don't know the history of the Baptists in NC, but before the Great Awakening later in the century they would not be a big part of the population, certainly not like now.

There would be suspicions of someone Catholic also being Jacobite at that date.
